Eating and drinking near The Pines

Ankeny's food and drink sit in two clusters, the newer one at Prairie Trail and the older one Uptown, with the North Ankeny Boulevard corridor filling in between. Here is what is on each, by road from The Pines.

The District at Prairie Trail

3.4 miles south off SW State Street, the walkable cluster. Jethro's BBQ Lakehouse opened the district in 2012 and still anchors it; alongside it are 30 Hop, District 36 Wine Bar and Grille, Grimaldi's Pizzeria, Magee's Irish Pub and Eatery, Hidalgo Mexican Bar and Grille and Smokey Row Coffee, all within a couple of blocks. B&B Theatres Ankeny 12 and B-Roll Bowling put a twelve-screen cinema, a bowling alley and an arcade in one building on SW Market Street, so dinner and the rest of the evening are the same stop.

Uptown Ankeny

The original downtown, along the SW and NW streets, is the brewery cluster. Firetrucker Brewery took over the old Ankeny fire station on SW Third Street and keeps a large covered patio; Uptown Garage Brewing and Trailside Tap are within a couple of blocks, and Porch Light Coffee House runs the morning side. The Saturday farmers market fills the Ankeny Market and Pavilion through the warm months.

Close to home

For the weeknight version, North Ankeny Boulevard runs the chains and quick stops within a mile or two of the neighborhood. The High Trestle Trail head is 1.6 miles away, and a patio at the end of a ride is its own kind of dinner plan. The homes run from 1,360 to 1,800 square feet across four plans, in two and three bedrooms, each with an attached garage, a washer and dryer in the home, central air and a gas fireplace.
